International Day of Happiness - 20 March
20 March, 2026 (All day)

The International Day of Happiness, also known simply as Happiness Day, is a global celebration held each year on 20 March. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to recognise happiness and wellbeing as universal human aspirations. By creating this observance, the UN acknowledged that economic growth alone is not enough to measure progress — social inclusion, mental health, sustainability and overall life satisfaction are equally important indicators of a thriving society. The day serves as a reminder that happiness is not a luxury, but a meaningful goal that should be considered in policy-making, education, workplaces and community life.

At its heart, International Day of Happiness encourages people everywhere to reflect on what truly brings joy and fulfilment. While happiness can be personal — found in relationships, purpose, gratitude and health — it is also deeply connected to our social environments. Communities that foster trust, kindness, equality and opportunity tend to experience higher levels of collective wellbeing.

The 2026 theme, ‘Caring and Sharing,’ emphasises that happiness grows through connection. It highlights the importance of empathy, compassion and mutual support in building stronger, more positive communities. Acts of kindness — whether small gestures between individuals or larger community initiatives — contribute to a sense of belonging and collective wellbeing. Sharing time, resources, encouragement and understanding can strengthen relationships and reduce feelings of isolation, which are key factors in overall happiness.

By focusing on Caring and Sharing, the 2026 observance reminds us that happiness is not only about individual achievement or personal success. It is nurtured through meaningful relationships and supportive environments where people feel valued and understood. On 20 March, individuals, schools, workplaces and organisations are encouraged to celebrate through activities that promote gratitude, generosity and inclusion — reinforcing the idea that when we care for one another and share what we have, we create happier, healthier societies for all.
