Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Northern Ireland and is caused by overexposure to UV (ultraviolet) light. Sunlight and sunbeds are the main sources of UV.

4 in 5 cases of skin cancer can be prevented. Did you know UV damage to your skin cells can start before your skin tans or burns? Often we don’t realise when our skin is being damaged, so it is important to be UV aware in order to stay safe in the sun.

Benefits of skin scan

Undertaking a skin scan will reveal the levels of skin damage that you wouldn’t normally be able to see. It will reveal any brown spots, freckles and redness, all of which are usually signs of skin damage. Though it doesn’t treat the sun damage itself, usually revealing the damage that has already been done is enough to ensure that the right steps are taken to minimise the future risk of sun damage.

Participants should be aware that facial products (make-up, moisturiser, self- tanning etc.) will have a visible pigment within the scanner. This can make it difficult to see the level of UV damage on the face.

However, there is no requirement to attend the session without make- up or any other facial products on the skin.
