Coping with Bereavement

 

One child in every classroom in Northern Ireland will experience the death ofsomeone close to them by the time they leave school.

Marie Curie and Cruse Bereavement Support recognise the confusion, fear, loneliness and pain this can cause for children and young people and are collaborating to provide free training support for teaching staff.

A series of one day courses will run in May, June, August and September 2022and we are assessing the demand before coordinating dates and venues.

Course content will include:• Supporting the grieving child within the education system• Common Responses to grief, including stages of grief• The impact of adult grief on children and young people• Models of grief• Difficult questions and how to answer them• Experiencing grief through the eyes of a young person• Practical support activities and resources• School bereavement policy templates• Fears, concerns and attitudes• Using appropriate language• Pre-bereavement and anticipatory grief
