Explore the sober lifestyle to the max with Millie Gooch's selection of sage words, canny suggestions, and handy resources. This week, Millie focuses on how to unwind after work without reaching for a drink!

For many of us, grabbing a cold one is the perfect way to chill out and separate the working day from our own personal time. So how do you relax when you’re taking part in Sober Spring?

1. Change what's in your glass

You can still unwind with alcohol-free drinks. Switching to non-alcoholic alternatives can provide the psychological comfort of sipping on a beverage without the effects of alcohol. These drinks can range from herbal teas, which have their own stress-reducing properties, to crafted non-alcoholic cocktails that allow for the ritual of enjoying a special drink after work.

2. Get wet

Choosing a warm bath or a cold shower over a drink for unwinding has scientific benefits. Warm water immersion can lower cortisol levels, the body's stress hormone, promoting relaxation and better sleep. Cold showers, on the other hand, have been found to increase alertness and stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators, which can provide a natural energy boost and improve well-being. Thus, incorporating a bath or shower into your after-work routine can be a healthier, science-backed strategy to relax and rejuvenate – pick your poison!

3. Phone a friend

Engaging in a meaningful conversation not only fosters a sense of connection but also has tangible benefits for mental health. Scientific studies suggest that social interactions can increase levels of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," which helps in reducing stress and promoting feelings of happiness and well-being. Moreover, sharing your day's experiences and challenges can lead to emotional support and perspective, which are crucial for managing stress and anxiety!
