Shop safely this Christmas!

With Covid-19 restrictions keeping people away from High Streets and shopping centres, a lot of us are turning to online marketplaces for Christmas gift buying. But these websites are not subject to the same regulations as other retailers, meaning it's easy for dodgy dealers to sell counterfeit and sub-standard products. And when it's an electrical fake you're buying, the risk isn't just that it might fall apart or stop working - fake electrical products have a serious risk of electric shock or fire.

So, if you're buying electrical products online, make sure you know who you're buying from. Stick to the websites of known manufacturers and retailers such as those found on the High Street, rather than buying from third party sellers on online marketplaces.

Buying from Online Marketplaces

If you can only find that must-have electrical gift on a marketplace, download our Check It Out browser extension - it will let you know when you are buying from an unregulated third party retailer rather than directly from a manufacturer or High Street name.

A few other tips:

  • Don't assume that just because the prize isn't a crazy bargain the product is genuine - a lot of counterfeits are sold for just below the recommended retail price.
  • Don't rely on glowing reviews - these can also be faked!
  • Very often the product you receive will be very different to what you thought you were buying. Images and descriptions can be lifted from genuine retailers. So when you receive the product, check it carefully. Are there spelling mistakes on the packaging? Is all the paperwork included (instructions for use, warranty card etc.)? Are all the parts you're expecting included and in good condition? Does it come with a UK plug?
  • If you are concerned that you have bought a fake electrical product, don't use it and contact your local Trading Standards office.
