Taking care in the sun - Travel Health

Cancer

It's the summer, that usually means a relaxing holiday is just around the corner, but did you know this could be harmful to your skin? Here are some top tips from Cancer Focus on how to enjoy the sun safely whether you're jetting off to somewhere hot or taking some time off at home instead!

Research shows that 40-50% of people in Northern Ireland do not apply sunscreen at home when sunbathing or while outdoors. UV awareness is important – you don’t need to be sunbathing to get skin cancer; it’s over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun or sunbeds which can cause serious damage over time. It’s important for everyone to avoid getting sunburned, particularly children.

Due to the change in climate and intensity of UV rays, holidays are an at risk time for sunburn.

Top tips to enjoy the sun safely are to:

  • Stay in the shade or limit sun exposure between 11am and 3pm.
  • Cover up with long sleeves or a t-shirt.
  • Wear sunglasses and a broad brim hat or cap.
  • Use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 plus UVA 4-star and apply liberally.
