Microscopic Colitis

Crohn's and Colitis UK

Microscopic Colitis is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease that affects the large bowel (colon and rectum). There are two main forms of Microscopic Colitis – Lymphocytic Colitis and Collagenous Colitis. These are very similar conditions and are commonly referred to under the single name ‘Microscopic Colitis’.

It can take to time to get a diagnosis of Microscopic Colitis. And dealing with watery poo, tummy cramps, and rushing to the toilet can all be hard to manage. Many people respond well to treatment and often symptoms go away when you find what’s right for you.

The main symptom of Microscopic Colitis is ongoing watery diarrhoea. This is where you pass watery or loose poo more than three times a day for longer than four weeks. For some people this can be as many as fifteen times during the day and night.
