Research shows that owning a pet could actually make you happier.

The unconditional love and companionship a pet can give you can help you stay calm in times of stress and even boost your mood; there’s nothing like a wagging tail greeting you every day when you get home, a quiet cuddle on the couch to unwind after a long day or an energetic trip to the local park for a dose of feel good emotions.

These activities encourage a heathy lifestyle, keep you active and help you stay mindful and present in your daily routine.

How does this work?

Studies have shown that spending time with pets may help boost your levels of oxytocin – this is a chemical produced in the brain that helps you feel bonded to others, similar to falling in love. Additionally, levels of oxytocin have been shown to increase in your pet as well!

A study investigated oxytocin levels of humans and their pets after they had spent some time playing together. After just half an hour of this, both the human and animal experienced a noticeable oxytocin boost. Dogs showed a higher amount compared to cats and humans that had the most eye contact with their pets experienced a bigger boost in the bonding hormone – some up to a 60% increase.
