Why so many struggle in silence at Christmas
Addiction/DrugsOur Trustee Lester Posner reflects on the challenges many people face during the festive period, with many not seeking support due to the stigma surrounding gambling harms.
He also shares how our Break Free From the Feeling Campaign is helping shape the reality of those seeking support.
For many people affected by gambling harm, Christmas can be one of the hardest times of the year. Social comparisons and expectations of how we ‘should’ feel can make gambling seem like a momentary escape.
At the same time, stigma around gambling harm discourages many from reaching out for support at the moment they might need it most.
As a trustee at the UK charity GamCare, I’m proud of how the team have worked with agency partners 23red on the Break Free From the Feeling campaign to increase awareness of the help available.
Despite how many people are affected, meaningful conversations about gambling are rare, especially in social settings. We often talk about day-to-day things, but rarely about what’s really causing distress, because raising it can feel uncomfortable.
Why GamCare’s campaign is importantThe Break Free From the Feeling campaign is shaped with these realities in mind. When an issue is surrounded by shame or silence, it cannot be approached in the usual way.
Instead of waiting for people to come forward, the campaign aims to reach them in the places where they already are — in chat rooms, on gambling sites, and in pubs, restaurants, casinos and even healthcare settings — showing the emotional side of gambling harm and offering support that feels safe and approachable.
It encourages people to take the first step and not wait until things become unmanageable before seeking support.
I’m reminded how powerful kindness and empathy can be in helping someone begin to reshape things, and that is exactly what GamCare is here for: 24/7, free, confidential and non-judgemental support whenever someone feels ready to reach out.
Our Helpline is available 24/7 on 0808 8020 133 and there are many ways to get in touch if you’re not comfortable calling us. Make the step that feels right for you, and we’ll be on the other end of the line ready to help.
