Tip of the day: Do you eat enough of this?

Healthy Diet

There could very well be something in your cupboard that could help you live longer! It has been recently reported that around 90% of us aren't eating enough of these types of foods that have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes as well as type 2 diabetes. Not to mention it can help keep your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels down - nobody will complain about that!

Your tip of the day today is to... (drum roll please) EAT MORE FIBRE!

Fibre - it's not the sexiest thing in the world but a major study has been investigating how much fibre we really need to be eating and found there are huge health benefits. It has been recommended that we consume around 20 - 30g of fibre everyday - something most of us do not do, meaning you may be missing out on many benefits to health and a longer life!

It's not easy but here are some short tips so you can increase your fibre intake:

  • cooking potatoes with the skin on
  • swapping white bread, pasta and rice for wholemeal versions
  • choosing high-fibre breakfast cereals such as porridge oats
  • chucking some chickpeas, beans or lentils in a curry or over a salad
  • having nuts or fresh fruit for snacks or dessert
  • consuming at least five portions of fruit or vegetables each day
