Money Worries

Mental Health / Financial Health

When money is tight we are placed under a great amount of stress. Trying to gain and maintain control over finances can be daunting, and can lead to feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness and insecurity over future prospects.

Money worries can also create conflict within families and damage relationships.

Money worries can impact on mental health due to the influence money has on our standard of living and continued involvement in many social activities.

Not having enough money, or not being financially secure, can trigger stress and worry about not being able to meet financial demands.

Debt can also have a severe impact on our mental health and wellbeing. Problems with debt can affect anyone, and what may seem a small amount to one person can be crippling for someone else.

Many people have very easy access to credit, either through credit cards, store cards, loans or some other form of credit, and it can be easy to find yourself in over your head.

Remember, there is help available and you are not alone.

Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau for practical advice on money issues or visit their website www.citizensadvice.co.uk or visit NI Direct.

Unemployment

The loss of employment can impact on our mental health in a variety of ways. Loss of employment equates to a loss of income, loss of status, loss of daily routine and a loss of social and professional contact.

Long-term unemployment can be equally as devastating, leading to isolation, low self-esteem and financial hardship. All of these can impact on our mental health.

While job-seeking remember to also explore alternative options for maintaining social contact and good self-esteem by taking up a hobby or social activity, or perhaps considering volunteering. For more information visit NI Direct.
