5 ways to beat email stress

Workplace Health

Emails have changed the way we work and communicate on a day to day basis.

With advancements in technology, this means we are almost never away from our emails, even when we leave work; 62% of workers reported that they check their emails whilst on annual leave or outside of the office. So here are 5 simple tips to beat email stress and give you control over your inbox.

  • Don’t be enslaved by your email

Email is there to serve you – so this means you can choose whether or not to open your email or to respond. You are in control.

  • Put your email into perspective

Can you remember the last time an email changed your life forever? Taking a break from your emails or delaying a reply is not the end of the world, so do remember that when things get stressful.

  • Choose your time to reduce email stress

Regularly checking your emails can get in the way of other tasks. Simply, choose a time and how long you are going to dedicate to your emails; once you have done this, logout or mute your inbox until you are ready again.

  • File/save important things right away

If you have a lot of emails to work your way through, choose one, reply if it requires one, and then save, delete or archive it before moving on to the next. With this technique, you are in control and can decide how best to deal with each.

  • Stop panicking!

An email is not an order. If somebody urgently needs you then they will call. Just because you receive the email does not make it your priority, take your time and respond to it when you are next free.
