Take a Moment. Start a Conversation.

Mental Health

You can’t hear the damaging thoughts that go on in someone’s head during a crisis, but you do have the power to interrupt and help silence those thoughts. If you’re worried about someone: Take a moment. Start a conversation.

The Mental Health Champion's new campaign 'Take a Moment. Start a Conversation.' recognises that connecting with someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis can be difficult, but starting the conversation can make a real difference.

Small, everyday conversations can interrupt overwhelming negative thoughts and let people know that someone cares. You don’t need special training, start with a comment about the weather, or an observation about the environment. You could also ask more directly if they’re ok. You’ll never make their situation worse, and it can really help turn things around.

There is lots of help available and, if someone is struggling or distressed it is important to let them know about the services that are available here in Northern Ireland.

Both Lifeline and Samaritans services are free and confidential, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You should call if you are in crisis or if you would like to speak to someone.
