Parental Emotional Health

Mental Health / Family Health

There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Every parent faces challenges and stressful situations. It is essential for parents to look after their mental and emotional health so as to best support themselves and their children. When parents take the time to prioritise their own health - physical, emotional and mental - they are better equipped to provide a safe and stable home for your child where they feel loved and protected.

Support System

Identify one or two people who you can go to for emotional and practical support.

Good Habits

Children learn through observation which they then mimic. Ensure that you are implementing positive habits that your children can imitate - such as regular exercise or ensuring that you are eating nutritious foods.

Set Routines

Routines can help both parents and children feel more secure. It gives a sense of control especially during times of heightened emotions or stress. Think about what times of the day are the most stressful or busy. Are there any tasks that you could do in advance in order to alleviate later stress.

Self Care

Looking after yourself includes eating regularly, eating nutrient-rich foods and moving your body. Think in advance about what your day looks like and when you can take time out to eat a snack or meal. Preparing healthy meals in advance is a great way to ensure that you are still getting essential nutrients despite a busy lifestyle. Family workouts like a short walk or yoga allow time to strengthen bonds and still exercise.

Seek Help

If feelings of depression, anxiety or anger persist seek professional support to help during difficult times.
