10 Steps to a Healthy Body Image - Mental Health

Mental Health

Although one list will not solve the pattern of negative self-talk and thinking, it can be the start of a new mindset and forming a positive relationship with your body.

Here are 10 simple changes you can make to start practising a healthier perspective:

Appreciate what you can do

Every day your body carries you closer to your dreams. Celebrate all of the amazing things your body does for you—running, dancing, breathing, laughing, dreaming, etc.

Write down what you like about yourself

These should be things that aren't related to how much you weigh or what you look like. Read this list often and remind yourself of your strengths and influences, add to this as you discover more.

True beauty is not skin deep

When you feel good about yourself it breeds a sense of openness, self-acceptance and confidence in your walk. Beauty is a state of mind, not a state of your body.

The whole person

When you look in the mirror don't focus on 'flaws' or specific body parts; see yourself as you see others and want them to see you - as a whole person.

Surround yourself with positive people

When you are around others that are supportive and understand you, it is easier to feel good about yourself. You'll realise that they like you as you naturally are and not because they have an ideal that you will 'one day hopefully meet'.

Shut down negative self-talk

The next time you start to tear yourself down, build yourself back up with a few affirmations that work for you.

Become critical of online content

Pay attention to images, slogans and attitudes online that make you feel bad about yourself. Protest these messages and talk back to distance yourself from those false ideals and societal beliefs.

Do something nice for yourself

This can be anything that lets your body know you appreciate it. Have a bubble bath, go for a long walk, or find a peaceful place to relax.

Channel your energy

Instead of thinking about calories or worrying about food, use your time and energy to help others or do something nice for someone you care about. Helping others can work wonders for your self-compassion. Why not use this as an opportunity to start your Meaningful May, it's never too late!
